Although employment growth has slowed somewhat in 2025, it still rose by 0.6 percent, representing an increase of around 5,600 workers.
In 2025 the unemployment rate continued to rise. At 5.0 per cent Munich's figure still remains well below those of comparable major German cities such as Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart.
Munich is particularly strong in innovative industries. The information and communications sector, which has boomed for many years, is the best example of this.
The startup and founding scene developed excellently in 2025. Munich has taken the lead in startup foundations and is well ahead of Berlin.
Munich-based companies' economic strength and stable business development are also reflected in consistently high trade tax revenues. Further increases in trade tax revenues are expected in the future, which will help secure the municipality's long-term financial stability.
