QS World University Rankings 2023

Internationally, Munich's universities are once again maintaining their good reputation. In the current QS World University Rankings 2023, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is once again the best German university. Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) has won the neck-and-neck race with Ruprecht-Karls Universität Heidelberg and is once again the second-best German university.

TUM moved up one place compared to last year, landing in 49th place worldwide in this year's ranking, making it the top German university in the QS ranking for the eighth year in a row. It is also the third best university in the EU countries after Université PSL in Paris (26th) and Institut Polytechnique de Paris (48th).

LMU reached 59th place, improving by five places, particularly markedly in three of the six QS indicators. It achieved the greatest increase in the ratio of faculties to students. LMU also has the highest academic reputation in Germany. It ranks 37th worldwide in this respect.

In an international comparison, Germany's higher education system holds its own as one of the best, with more than 60 percent of German universities in the top 500, including an impressive 11 in the top 200. The numerically good faculty-to-student ratio is viewed particularly positively; increases were also evident here.

As in previous years, the ranking is dominated by Anglo-American universities, but also by British universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) holds on to the top spot, this time followed by Cambridge University. Third place goes to Stanford University.

This time, the ranking by the British HR services provider QS Quacquarelli Symonds evaluates 1,418 universities at 100 locations worldwide, the largest ranking to date. It is based on surveys of the reputation of universities in academia and business - on academic papers, how many citations are circulated from them, and the expert opinions of more than 151,000 academic faculty and more than 99,000 employers.
